was recently named a National Blue Ribbon School, marking the first time a West Covina Unified School District high school has received the honor. MECA is also a California Distinguished School.

MECA, a public four-year school that opened in 2018 through a partnership with Mt. SAC, allows students the unique opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts (AA) degree and college credits, free of charge, while obtaining their high school diploma. College courses are taught on campus by Mt. SAC professors during the school day, and books and materials provided at no cost.

鈥淭his honor is a significant and special milestone for the Mt. SAC Early College Academy and on behalf of the entire Mt. SAC Board of Trustees, we express our great pride,鈥 said Board Member Dr. Robert F. Hidalgo, who represents West Covina. 鈥淎s a high school educator, I recognize the vital importance of providing students -- regardless of their circumstances -- with the opportunity to get a head start on their college journeys.鈥

The National Blue Ribbon School Award celebrates schools demonstrating exceptional academic performance or making significant strides in closing achievement gaps among student groups. MECA's recognition in the "Exemplary High Performing Schools" category reflects its dedication to academic excellence, innovative instructional practices, and the collective effort of students, educators, and families.

鈥淭his is an extraordinary accomplishment, particularly when you consider that only 30 schools in California and 356 nationwide received this esteemed recognition in 2024,鈥 said Principal Dr. Ryan McDonnell. 鈥淭his award speaks volumes about the unwavering dedication and outstanding academic achievements of our remarkable students and staff. Their commitment to excellence is truly inspiring, and it would not be possible without our invaluable dual enrollment partnership with 糖心Vlog传媒, which provides our students with unparalleled opportunities for growth and achievement."

During the 2023-24 school year, 41 students completed the full and partial lower-division transfer requirements for college admission, 11 earned an AA degree, and 75% of graduating seniors were accepted into a four-year institution. MECA boasted a 100% graduation rate, a 96% A-G completion rate, and 97% of graduates went on to continue their higher education. The student population is 75 percent Latino and 16 percent Asian.

A National Blue Ribbon School flag will now proudly fly at MECA, symbolizing the school's commitment to fostering educational excellence.
